I'm looking at growing out some young A. rhytisma which I understand to be sand sifters. Is quickrete silica sand a safe substrate to use or is there something else just as inexpensive and easily accessible to?

One of the best, cheapest and easily accessable types of substrate to use is pool filter sand. A 50# bag will cost $6-$8. I use it for my Geos and they like it just fine. I don't know about the quikcrete stuff. Might be something else mixed in other than sand.
Despite what the name may make you think, it's actually high graded silica sand for use in pool filters, not for making concrete quickly.

So the silica sand from home depot is safe for sand sifters? I just know that silica sand is not good for rays because it's too abrasize. I wanted to know if the sand might affect rhystimas.
I use Silica sand in my Rio 400 with Oscars and they seem fine despite moving the sand around a lot but before I put it in the tank I washed 50KG of the stuff by churning it with my hands, changing the water and churning again and again, my hands were quite sore afterwards.
i bought quikrete white fine sand. Its silica and it works perfect in my tank no problems. I bought it instead of pool filter sand because its bright beach white. No mixed colors.

yep pool filter sand is just silica sand. not sure about the grain difference but its all the same material. my geos sift it all day long and there have never been any problems.
