yep pool filter sand is just silica sand. not sure about the grain difference but its all the same material. my geos sift it all day long and there have never been any problems.

Thank you all for sharing your experience. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear, that it is safe to use on my a. rhytisma and won't hurt their throats while sifting.

I have used all grades of silica in my tanks, the PFS size is the best suited for tanks for the simple fact that most filters can't suck it up, unless the intake hits the bottom of the tank of course. The sand blasting grades are so fine that they "float" around the water column too easily. I have kept all types of SA eartheaters over silica, NEVER have I ever seen any irritation or damage to the fish, mouths or bellies. I can't see it being too abraisive for a Ray or any other bottom dwelling fish for that matter, Silica is produced all over the world in rivers and lakes, including Bazil. Just make sure that there are no additives.

Thank you for your feedback. That is really encouraging to know that you have had that experience and saw no harm to the fish with silica sand.

I never used silica sand on my ray because of what I heard it does to damage its a ray's skin from being too abrasive. But I think I'm going to use it for my A. rhytisma tank.

I just bought 100 lbs of the "Medium Sand" from quickrete. I pulled the MSDS (material safety data sheet) what manufacturers have to provide for their products and it list all of it's industrial silica sand as non ecotoxic, safe for aquatic life. I will wait until they reply to me on there are extra additives or not before using it though.

I will agree on this stuff being snow ****e in color.

Not sure why that word did the cuss thing. My apologies if I spelled it wrong. I meant snow "w h i t e" in color.
