Is Rainbow Trout a good food for Piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can feed them trout except it should be done sparingly as they are oily and tend to pollute your water more. These oils are beneficial to your fish but not if they end up decaying in your water.

Infact my piranhad get more oily fish(mackeral, smelt, salmon) than white fleshed fish(tilapia, basa catfish) but thats only because i do large 75-90% water changes weekly if i was doing any less i wouldn't feed them oily fish more than once a week.

@ Mfgl trout is not a minnow BTW trout are members of the salmonidae family minnows are cyprinoids.

Get storebought food for your Ps, and get yourself a flyrod (for real). You and your fish will be happier and healthier. Wish I had a good trout stream near me.

The steal leader trick definetely does work if you're feeding larger chunks of fish. I know a few guys in here them.
dont know if id use a seal leader.i use to use fishing line and a sewing needle.to feed deer liver.one time my rbp.one time he swallowed the line.i ended up cutting the line as close to his mouth i could get and just let it pass.

i feed my cichla healthy wild trout every once in a while. Cut up pieces of filet and they love it.

Considerably more fat in the trout. Other than that you have to worry about parasites and disease. A deep freeze might lessen the chances. Feeding fillets is better than whole fish. Always take the guts out of wild caught fish. Its my understanding that most of the worst parasites are located here.

My first set of Red Belly P's I had years ago ate a lot of stuff I pulled out of the lake myself. Sunnies, bass, ect... not saying this was the best diet but they did OK with it as about 20% of thier diet. As far as I know they were parasite and disease free. They lived for about 7 years in total.

when im feeding shrimp or feeders alike live or dead, i have a safety pin attached to a steal leader attched to fishing line tied to the tank, i stick the pin the the fish or shrimp and drop it in, the piranhas tear away, and i pull it out the next morning with minimal cleaning.

I used to feed on fishing line, until my pirayas got big enough to bite thru the thickest line.
Then I used a steel leader, which worked great until they grabbed it and didn't let go. Might've been caught between their teeth.

Now I just toss it in.

My Ps love trout and salmon, but I always alternate food, e.g. haddock, tilapia, catfish, mahi mahi, whatever is cheap and available.
