is a sandy or small gravel substrate required for a bgk. i just bought the tank and it came with some red volcanic looking rock that is quite jagged. if i do have to small substrate could i just cover what i already have?
It's advisable to put sand substrate for BGK as its original habitat is the river ("sandy bed"). A fish expert friend also told me that the BGK uses the sand as a reflective material when it emits the weak electrical signal for navigation.
I use white sand to contrast the colour of the fish and something which reminds me of the river too. Add some nice plants for a beautiful landscaping.

the volcanic rock wouldnt have been my first choice for substrate but it came with the tank and im poor so heres where we end up.
do you guys think that a smaller grained substrate (3mm smooth gravel) would end up completly under the rock (being a wast of time and money) or remain as a cover over the rock.
