You don't have to break down your tank to change substraits. Remove all of the old gravil in thirds..letting the junk settle down between steps. Once you have a clean bare bottom then start putting in the clean sand. (much easier if its wet.) turn your filters off until the sand settles and if possible raise the intake tubes of your filters to the midway point on the tank to prevent sand from getting in the filter(s)

Don't know if you have any fish except cichlids that are in this tank, but anything that likes to burrow in the sand cannot be kept in silica sand because silica is sharp like razor blades. It can cause abrasions and gill infections.
s my pleco would not be able to be in my tank because i am adding sand, is that it???????that sucks!!!

really? I have a friend with 2 stingrays, and he uses silica sand for substrate, and they don't seem to have a problem..
