Is something wrong with my redtail?

He has some sort of indentation/crevasse above his mouth. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Also, when he breathes it seems like his gills curl a little bit. Is this an early sign of gill curl? Not sure if he is breathing quick or not. Last night ammonia was 0ppm, nitrite was 0ppm, and nitrate was about 40ppm. I change about 10% of the water everyday and 30% at least one day a week. I included a video of him.

Can't really see the indent but he is breathing way to hard, he will have fill curl if you don't fix what's stressing him.

I'll do a huge water change when I get home. He has stopped hiding in his pipe which is his usual spot and he just sits out in the open. I thought he was getting less shy as he got bigger. Any suggestions to make him less stressed?

No light on the tank. That was from the sun rising. Within 1 hour the sun is higher and barely comes into the room at all. I think he outgrew his 4" PVC pipe hideout. Any suggestions on a cheap cave for a 11" rtc?

Gill curl oops, typo. You need to find out if it's the water parameters, tank size, tank mates, water temp, foods, is he sick, or other variables that are stressing him. Also check your PH, big messy fish can drop the Ph easy, and I found the hard way that RTC don't like to live in acid.

That's what I was planning on doing. Best way to score it? Last time I tried using a flower pot it ended up in pieces. How long does it take gill curl to set in? He started acting like this last night, will he be fine until later tonight?

It's not just because he doesn't have a place to hide, something else is going on. Hiding helps stress, but my RTCs never had caves and grew up just fine, including my current 22".
