One more question for you guys out there. His one gill is starting to look pretty bad. Can gill curl correct itself if the conditions are improved or is he stuck like that now?

I'm not sure, I have heard of people cutting the curl off and hoping it will grow back, not sure about that approach. I would think that if it would grow back then it would straighten, but IDK.

Any updates? Did your plan work?

I think the gill will never straighten once curled/having started to curl. Fish with curled gills have poorer flow of water through their gills and, hence, need a higher oxygen content in the water.

I didn't catch any info on how well aerated and mixed your water is. Did I miss it?

His behavior is now back to normal but his gill remains curled. The water is highly aerated.
