I want to setup a freshwater system but I hate the job of syphoning out the dirt and replacing the water every week.

Is there a better way to get fresh water into the tank and cleaning it than using that syphon method? Or is that still the best way to clean

Yikes I looked that up on youtube.

There is no way I could convince my wife to allow me to do that.

I guess syphoning it is for me.

Are you using buckets? Python is pretty easy, 5 minutes of spot cleaning then do what you want until it's time to flip the valve.

Pump or powerhead attached to a hose can drain a tank very quickly. I can drain about 75% of my 300 gallon tank in about 8-10 minutes. I have pool filter sand with geophagus in that tank, so I almost never "gravel vac" it. I have my Python hooked up at the same time and start filling the tank as soon as the draining is finished.

The way I do it is with a pool hose as a drain method out to the yard.....I don't know how thick it is but I would imagine it's around 2 inches wide or more....drains my 340 fast. Then I fill with a Potable water gardening hose attached to the sink.....important that it says potable water so that it does not have chemicals in it. Very simple and fast

HONESTLY... YES IT"S STILL REQUIRED!!!

If you're NOT prepared to syphon the gravel(at LEAST WITH A PYTHON drain and fill type system like most of us use) and do water changes regularly, or spend what it takes to do a DRIP SYSTEM, then you really DON'T need to be keeping wet-pets.....

I drain/syphon my 7 basement tanks out into a 32 gallon BRUTE trashcan(OR DIRECTLY TO THE LAWN), then pump to my back yard through the basement door to my wife's garden, or to the grass. It's pumped through a normal garden hose by a 2100GPH pond water pump from that 32 gallon Brute trashcan on wheels. I then refill from a utility sink I installed in the basement. For my UPSTAIRS tanks I drain/syphon the tanks directly to the toilet via python hose, then connect to bathroom sink and refill. It's really NOT HARD AT ALL, work SMART, NOT HARD....

Sorry, with aquariums, water changes ARE just a fact, it COMES WITH THE TERRITORY. It's just like the picking up DOG POOP that comes with owning a dog (which is why I DON'T OWN ONE, cause I'm NOT picking up dog crap)....
