Is table salt really ok?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Either will work. Doesn't matter which you want to use.

LUPIN IS RIGHT. KINDA LIKE W/ PUMPS. THE MINUTE IT SAYS AQUARIUM THE PRICE GOES UP. LOOK IN THE POND SECTION AND ITS ALOT CHEAPER. SAME THING LOWER PRICE. SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND READ. ALOT OF MISCONCEPTIONS OUT THERE. NO QUESTION IS A DUMB QUESTION IF YOU DONT KNOW. THIS IS HOW WE LEARN AND PASS KNOWLEDGE AROUND THE HOBBY.

how much salt per gallon ?

Three teaspoons per gallon or 0.3%.

First dose-One teaspoon per gallon.
Second dose-Repeat first dosage in 12 hours.
Third dose-Repeat the same dosage in another 12 hours right after second dosage.

Dissolve salt thoroughly in a cup of tank water before adding as a precaution. And every new fish as a rule (and it should rather be set on stone IMO) should be quarantined for at least 3-4 weeks. Patience will pay you off eventually. The longer a fish is quarantined, the better as it allows you to observe further for unusual symptoms. Some diseases do not come out until later on.

Ich makes a good floodgate for bacterial infection as the protozoans pierce through the skin thus exposing the blood vessels to aeromonas. Aeromonas bacteria is always present in the tank so be on the lookout for hemorrhaging, secondary phenomenon to ich and any parasitic infection.

Evan, please elaborate why instead of telling us vaguely why iodine is not okay. This has been argued several times but the point is already moot. Many people have used iodized table salt and they attested directly they never had issues with it so what is the point of denying something that already works? I also used it several times with my own fish especially loaches with no trouble.
