is the AC110 worth it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two AC110s and a XP4 on my 150. The AC110s are the KING of HOB in my opinion. I am not a big fan of the XP4. But, I do prefer Canister over HOB.

Ever think about looking into a sump?

ya ive looked into them, and in fact i have a wet/dry, but needs a new overflow and it was only 10$ off a friend so im not quick to jump in it, always worried about not taking that one step to preventing floods..just paranoid :nilly: but, i take it, the XP3 is *worth* it in the long run? i love canisters, just herd about the AC110s and found a good deal for 60$ new so i was wondering.. i would love an FX5 but have herd they have ups and downs often, so if the XP3 is worth it, then thats good!.. and yes i would die to have an eheim 2262..but...average american here :D

I hear you...its amazing how expensive things get the bigger you go!

The XP series are "OK" in my opinion. Like I said, I have one, but it doesn't seem to be as effective as the Magnum 350 it replaced (which is about 1/2 the cost). It seems that people that have XPs either love 'em or hate 'em. I am more like "blah" with it. Since you are looking more towards "extra filtration"...you may even want to check out the 350.

One nice thing about the XPs, you can pretty much configure the baskets how you want. You can make them all mechanical and use either expensive filter pads or make your own from floss. You can use bio balls, stars, etc for bio filtration or use filter socks and toss in some carbon if need be. Of course with 3 baskets (XP3) or 4 (XP4), you can also configure combinations of the different filter processes.

Since your tank is already advanced, I suggest you look at another canister versus the 110. It's a damn good filter, but I think you are beyond it already.

Good luck!

thanks alot! i was looking at the 350's and they sounded pretty good as well..darn canister filters..millions of em..>:( ill probably concider the xp3 for the price/product idea, i found a few new ones for the 150$ range, so i may jump on one. i was just wondering if it would be smarter to go with another eheim 2217 for 159.99, or an xp3 for 150-160$.. so IDK! :nilly:

Are you in need of bio filtration or mechanical filtration? The Xp is an excellent bio filter but has it's short comings when it comes to mech. The ac110 is one of the best mech filters for the money. Best bet is to use the two in tandem with one another.

most likely bio, pretty good on mech. now.. two in tandem would = 4 filters on one tank...that sounds perfect :D but..i think ill go with the XP3.. so well see how it goes! thanks guys!

Put a sponge on intake of aquaclear and then you can have sand I did on my three aquaclear 110s and no more problems.
