is there a cichlid that can beat up a jack dempsey?

if you want a fish just to boast to your friend go with an umbee. they're more colorful, bigger, more and aggressive

My oscar isnt afraid of my JD yet. Maybe because they are still small though.

Get a adult red zebra mbuna and a female and watch what happens. If you happen to get one with the right personality your jack is going to turn into a whimpering coward very fast.

I once had a Managuense that did not go out of its way to bother other fish and if left alone never bullied anything. But absolutely nothing tried bullying it more than once.

I find JD's to only be tough when spawning. My 5" female wooped my 12" Oscar.

Now my convict pair chase both JD's away at only 3". My 4" Jag on the other hand whoops both convicts but runs from the JD's...

I think their are many factors involved like territory and spawning etc...

Just my 2 cents...

IMO dovii and umbees are the most aggressive cichlids. no jack dempsey will have a chance against one of those big boys

I still see JDs very low on the aggro scale. I don't consider them as bruisers on average. I know that there are a few out there that are real aggressive, but not enough to gain a reputation. I think your friend probably has never had any other large cichlid other than his JD. If he had a Red Devil, Jag, Uro, or even a Salvini, he probably wouldn't be bragging so much about a JD. But like someone mentioned earlier, the only way to truly test the toughness of his JD is to pit it against another mean cichlid. And that would be cruel and juvenile. Fish have diverse personalities, no matter their species. I've seen some really big and mean fish get punked by some very small but brave fish.
