is there a ''heavy'' sand out there

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
safe very cheap and wont syphon up or get in your filter. i use it and even the gold dojo likes it. very easy to clean too. this quartz w/ a ceramic coating making it more smooth around the edges . i would use the t grade its heavier.;)

I'll be switching my 240 to 3M colorquartz eventually. T grade is the one to go with if you want heavier sand that won't cloud up or get in the filters.

When I worked for a water well drilling company we used "Gravel Pack" for some of the wells. It is basically really course sand and not gravel at all, it comes in like 6 different grades from faily fine to very course. I have had it in two of my tanks for over two years now without any problems what so ever. It does not come in any other color other then natural. It is very cheap too. I might be harder to find then pool filter sand, but i do belive you can get some the is courser then pool filter sand if you are worried about your filters.

I wanted to try the 3m colorquartz, but the nearest place to get it was about 3 hours away and I didn't want to drive that far. So I got the moon sand for $20 a bag from the LFS.

Howdy,

Just for future filtration upgardes: Eheim canisters have their impellers on top - no sand ever damaged any of my Eheims.

3m colorquartz is heavy because it is an epoxy sealed quartz. The resin coating is non porous and pretty much impervious to almost anything that a normal fish tank can throw at it.

I just got some 45-49 grade white quartz filter sand. It is a decent size and is not getting sucked into my drain lines. I have about 5000 gph flow in there just to see what happens. The colorquartz of similar size is much heavier though.

yeah there is heavy sand... go to your local pool shop... they sell heavier sand

Yup, most good pool shops sell high grade quartz in different particle sizes. The sand I have is all pretty uniform particles, small enough to be sand, but not small enough to get thrown around like the finer stuff.
