but what confuse me is that i actually saw a species of datnoids that are pure black (in Singapore they call most datnoids tiger-fish) .. but they're too expensive and i only managed to get the baby ones

there are also some full grown adult sized one which is pure black in colour, will take a photo again of the adult one next week when i visit the lfs again.

Background can effect there colors and may not at the same time. It all depends on the fish. I have a ST and ITs that are jet black and there not stressed. They are in a dark backgound tank and gravel. Thats just the color they prefer to stay unlike others. Some will always stay black and thats that or unstable. I had a dat the other day that was so black that the bars were showing as a lighter color and looked pretty cool. Like i said it just depends on the fish imo.

It's probably unstable.. that's all.

i am just going off of a different persons fish...the dark substraite darks all other fish so i figured it could be true with dats...all my dats look like the one you posted...

I can't see the pic of your dat but a stressed NGT can be black. If you take a look at my thread called new underwater camera you can see my black NGT that didn't like my camera in his tank. Seeing you said they were expensive they are currentlly the most expensive besides ST datnoids.

just unstable....the 11" IT i got from a shop was jet black in their tank. It stabled up minutes after going in my tank.
