I agree that this site can get pretty childish at times. You have your responsible and sensible monster fish keepers that see the dirty deeds of the hobby and feed their larger fish with feeder fish and do not "brag" about it or think it is funny, just a part of what they have to do.

Even those that are amazed at what their fish can do and eat are okay.

There are those on this site that want the biggest and meanest fish they can get just like the those that have to have the biggest and meanest dog. It is a status for them, which is sad.

There are those that speak out against videos on youtube of fish being slowly killed in tank like "torture" yet there are some on here that do it and get off on it. Disgusting? yes.

I agree in the wild it is fair game and the chase that you can not do in a tank. However, fish need to eat.

Does not mean it needs to be a circus.

There are MANY great large fish owners on this site and you cant let the children and immature ones chase you off from the good owners on here.

I agree too. Well said. Many people on this website also try to get the biggest, toughest fish, to just look cool. And if you don't have monster fish, they treat you like a newbie no matter who you are. I hate people who are like "my fish can kill yours".

At some point I will admit that I enjoyed watching my fish eat the feeders and I used the nature line. I wouldve probably recorded a video to show friends. Is that wrong? Im not sure. Would I do it now? Nope. But who is to say if its wrong?

I dont feel we should say its childishness or immaturity that makes people record and utube these things. That is a matter of opinion. I myself do not enjoy watching feeders get eaten and I do not know if thats maturity of the fact that its boring now.

If we are going to own these animals we must understand that certain personalities will outshine others always. The people who fight the pitbulls will always make the news before the ones who love their family pet and treat them with respect.

wanna post a reply one more time.

2 of my fish absolutely won't accept anything other then feeders at the moment, so i HAVE to feed them live fish (won't even accept earthworms or crickets) i've worked, starving them for weeks and weeks, yet it didn't work. if not for that i wouldn't feed live fish accept as a rare treat, but I still like watching my fish eat other fish. its fun watching its natural predatory instincts come out and chase after a fish and gulp it down.

if that makes me sadistic and wrong, then i guess i'm sadistic and wrong. guess i better dress up like a clown and start the texas chain saw massacre up again. (jk)

You do that too?

I actually like to watch my fish "hunt" down a feeder occasionally.

I had a pair of clown knives that were a little over a foot.....the person that had them before only ever fed them feeders.

Because I couldn't get them to eat anything else it cost me 40$ a month for minnows........

Whoever said it is a PITA to feed live was right on...

im dont necessarily enjoy watching my fish eat other fish for the rampage, death, kill scene...i just thouroughly enjoy/respect the power, speed, agility, and percision of predatory fish, its really amazing. its alos a manly thing, kind of brings man back to the stone age where he had to hunt for his food.

Well... they sure don't show animals as much anymore. It's all auto shows, experiments and different jobs.

Anyway, watching an animal slowly die or suffer an unnatural death is absolutely cruel to both the prey and predator. This is coming from a guy who has watched videos of live prey being forced down a predator's throat without killing it first.

I don't see a problem if a feeder die a relatively quick death in perspective of the predator, oppose to a slow death for the purpose of human entertainment. There is no big problem for me a snake to constrict a mouse or a goat, other than the concern that the prey in question will harm the snake, since it doesn't take long before its life expire. I still feed frozen just for safety though.

On the other hand, I see a big problem with scavengers, like piranhas, being fed live feeders since it can take a long time for them to kill the feeder.

Yeah I noticed that too, I don't have cable anymore :nilly:
Yeah I used to keep piranhas, and reading about them, some of them eat fins, anything they can catch whole, nuts and berries that fall into the river.
They ate nuts, flake, pellets, shrimp/krill, beefheart and guppies. Plus, with large feeders, you have to clean the skull and spine.

Ok, well here is my thoughts. I am double sided here. on the one hand, yes, i am somewhat immature, and to be honest do get a sort of enjoyment out of committing savage acts on animals every now and then and I even think its funny sometimes. I enjoy watching the hunt when i put feeders in my tanks. I have even had my buddies over and placed bets on which feeder would last the longest. I like watching animals fight. ( I would never put them together for that sole purpose however) Do I enjoy watching animals suffer though? no. Do I condone putting an animal in a tank that it will surely die in, but how ever know it will take a long time and it will be miserable? no. Will I turn into a serial killer when I "grow up"? (I am 22) no. I realize that seems almost contradictory, but I do have a conscience, and have felt bad after a couple of the things I have done.

The fact is all of us have some privative urges and desires in us, some of us more than others, and some of us act on them much more than others as well. That is where most of this comes from. I wouldn’t and don’t brag about how big and bad and man my fish are, and I certainly don’t put videos of carnage online for all to see. My point with this is, that the claims that people keep them and do the types of things you have seen on the videos soley for bragging rights is just not true. I keep my fish because I enjoy them. Not to show them off.

As for the whole feeding them live food because its emulates nature, or they wont eat anything else, ok, I am with you on that. Honestly though, if you are trying to use that as an argument to your favor or to make you look more compassionate, it doesn’t fly. You have that kind of fish for a reason. If it really pained you to feed them live food you wouldn’t be keeping those types of fish.

I am trying to keep this as objective as possible, and don’t want to offend any one here, so don’t take anything here as a personal attack.

thoroughly enjoying this thread every one.:)
