damn i have been in the same boat as u two newbs throughout fish keeping... (masa06 & silvertip0)
all i ever wanted was a true eel or at least something that looked and acted a little more fierce (snake-like face, teeth, and a piscivorous appetite). and not something that looks like you could fracture its face on a strong current...
but the answer you two could be looking for as a great eel to keep in fresh for life is the Gold tulip eel. OR a Rope fish. neither are true eels, the tulip eel being more or less of a snake and the rope fish being a polypterus like bichirs. but they fit the nich very nicely.
The ugly or less practical alternative to these cool looking eels are Swamp eels, electric eels, lung fish, and american eels. swamp eels have no teeth and quite frankly, look like a squishy sock with bead eyes on the top... electric eels are knife fish that get huge and aren't very mobile... lung fish are just different and also get very huge... and american eels suck because of having to switch your tank to brackish water every season (which you wont know) in order to keep ur american eel at a maximum life span...
... though i could never get these due to living in hawaii who really wants to protect its worthless convict and tilapia infested rivers... so i give a long time of research on my part to u in hopes u can make better use of it.
