thanks, got to good size RTC im soon gonna give to someone with a bigass tank

whats in it now

So, you can keep it small, by keeping the water dirty, and not feeding it alot. Besides that, you along with most of us, do not have a tank big enough to keep it.
I am not saying all LFS's are bad, but you have to find the decent ones, then find the good sales people. Always research the fish before you buy, not after. I have 3 LFS's that I go to. I only trust a few of the sales people with correct info.
You will never be able to sell it to make money. There are to many out there at larger sizes. I see them in my LFS's for $100 at 18"-24" and they are probably there for life.

Wow, what a lot of crap floating around in this thread.

The fish will not grow as it should. Through scientific studies, researchers have found that fish secrete a natural hormone that, if it's levels build up, will stunt the growth of the fish. This is not healthy and will lead to a premature death of the fish. The only way to avoid letting this hormone's levels build up in your tank is to either do multiple massive weekly water changes, or house the fish in a high volume tank.

There. I have given the original poster some useful information and didn't set him on fire with unnecessary or unwarranted flaming. I can only hope that he does the responsible thing and gets the fish to someone who can properly care for it.

thats what my lfs said to me!!!!!!
iam sure they will still grow bigger than the tank, so either you need to upgrade huge or a nice pool failing that sell/give it away

Which part did your LFS say to you?

That there was a lot of crap floating around in this thread? :grinno:

LOL He picked the one topic, without even realizing it, that seems to piss everyone of and cause a massive flame fest.

You've obviously realized by now that a 55 gallon isn't nearly enough space for a fish that can grow as long as the tank. You should probably just get rid of it now.

dont feel too embarassed by believing what your lfs says, afterall they are supposed to be the "experts". you will learn over time to forget what most books and lfs say and go online to forums like this and ask the people who really know about the fish.
I was very lucky when i started out because i had a family friend set my tank up and he was a cichlid and betta breeder and often fetched good money for his fish so he knew his stuff. its unfortunate that more keepers dont get the start like i had because more would stay in the hobby.
example of an lfs explaining about the rtc to me a couple of years ago:
me "how big does this get?"
shop "about a foot maybe a little bigger."
me "will it be ok with my clown loaches, rams, angels and corys in a 5x2x2?"
shop "yeh should be fine its not a predator or aggressive so you will be ok!"
at that point i walked out and never went again. i always test a new lfs like that or by asking if guppies will be ok with my oscar?
i seen some rtc at a local public sealife centre in with pacu and they are truly magnificant beasts but they are also massive these were at least 3.5ft long by about 1ft across the head and i believe thats not fully grown.
