I keep both mentioned and rio niltepic as well. My pairs go in this order with aggression: niltepec, sarabia then naranjo.

Sarabia have my favorite color but shape more important to me so I prefer naranjo and found that the niltepiec have attributes of both

Rio sarabia most prolific, niltepec second with naranjo last. Naranjo hardest on female, sarabia second and niltepec not

Some of the baby niltepec I got don't grow but the ones that do grew faster than sarabia and naranjo

Niltepec and naranjo live in separate community tanks but sarabia can't

My current favorite are a female naranjo and a male niltepec (obviously they not together as pure blood is important to me) at some point I'll need thin out and first on chopping block would be niltepec and the only certain 'keeper' is male from rapps back in the day. I can't determine collection point, may not be pure blood. He paired up with female lyonsi accidentally. Obviously I don't sell fry as hate the fact today it's nearly impossible to find true texas or Midas or trimac etc because of all hybriding....but my limited knowledge without any scientific backing I believe this pair more of cross breed rather than hybrid. I think at one time they were the same fish that evolved differently due to environment like so many of the amphs but most of us have opinions and they could all be wrong.

In conclusion anger management cichlids has the best sarabia. COTA recently had nice naranjo. Max cichlids sells niltepec for cheap and has great customer service.

Everything above is based on my personal past and current experience but everyone's experience is different and so many factors involved including but not limited to: water quality, temperature, space, tank mates, did pair grow up together, food type/frequency, aquarium location, pond vs aquarium, size differential between male and female, individual specimen personality, does tank next to them have giant RTM pair or harmless grow outs, etc...hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed typing

OMG thank you for such detailed analysis and answers and to top it off gave me the people to go purchase from!!! Thanks again

Isn’t the niltepec the one that looks like it’s almost have a nuchal hump?

A thank you to fahaka30331 fahaka30331 for bringing up the question, I was just in the process of doing research myself to possibly acquire a group of trimac.

Thanks to mr cichlid mr cichlid , for your experience.

A few posts I liked that had some nice pics/info:

Im in the process of trying to get info on my current Trimac. I acquired it from another fish keeper at about 6" and he was not into mutts. At the time I was just happy to get a trimac so I didnt ask but now Im a bit curious. I love the general look of mine but personality wise its a dud. It is solo in a 90g and it does not glass bang or flare at me, just a dead stare. Not into food so it does not do the 'dance' like other fish I have. It just has the strangest personality.

There's no benefit in glass banging. It can hurt the fish and bare minimum they're stressed out. I know we the hobby enjoy it but it's equal or more fun trying to replicate their natural environment watching actual behavior. On the flip coin it's fun to have an interactive fish lol ike Heterotilapia buttikoferi or trimac or or or...so try starving him few days and then feed tiny portion wait a day repeat wait an other repeat then starve again... he'll start to notice you

My point was that his interaction level is very low. The fish doesn’t do much but look at you. Pretty much a dead stare. It already has eating issues. It barely eats and the food floats in tank for hours and it slowly picks it off. Ive tried many different foods (brands, sizes, floating, sinking) and I am feeding the one it likes the best. A friend suggested the ‘not feed it’ thing too, but it eats so little as is. Four feet over I have a 3” rtm with more personality and interaction.
