Is there driftwood made of "GOLD"?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The place is called Aquarium Aqualife in Kissimmee, FL. The owner said that the guy told him it was from Rio Negro. Now I dont know what is so special about this type of wood but it just seems way to overpriced to me. Like I said the money could be better spent on fish or something that actually moves instead of a piece of wood that will never mover unless it is knocked over.

Well I said I wasn't going to get it but after looking at it everytime I went to the lfs I just couldnt resist. Plus the owner gave it to me for $125. I actually only paid $65 since I had a credit for $60. I measured it before I place it in the tank and it actually measured 35" tall and almost 22" deep so I had to cut it down to fit in my 30" tall tank. I am extremely happy with the way that it looks in my tank. Well below are some pics so you can tell me if it was worth it or not. The big boulder in the middle is just there to help keep it from floating until it gets waterlogged; there is acutally a nice arch where the rock is. The tank is 72" x 24" x 30" for measurements sake.

i am sorry but based on the picture it's not worth that much at all. It doesnt really matter where the wood came from, the prices are determined by:

1) shape - some very unique shape and/or have many branchs going out
2) free standing: can it stand on its own without nailing it to slates
3) size

his asking price of $300+ is pretty much a joke for that piece of wood.

below are some samples i found on ebay that's considered desirable, all sold for around $40-70. You really need to have something very exotic looking to cost around $100

I agree with your determinations of price and too think that $300 was a joke which is why I didnt even think about buying it for that price. I saw some of those on ebay and they are nice pieces but barely any of them where the height that I wanted which was 30" and fairly wide and deep and free standing. I mean this piece is nearly two feet wide by two feet deep. If you can find one on ebay with the same dimensions then please post a pic. The pictures dont do this piece any justice since I cant get good pictures of all the angles. Those that are priced on ebay that are somewhat nice average around $50-$60 and then I have to add shipping and also make sure that it doesnt leach any tanins and that its actually as nice as it looks in the pics. This piece had previously been in another tank for some time so I wasnt too worried about tanins. I guess the key to buying this piece is the fact that I actually got to see it in person so I knew exactly what I was buying and also the fact that I had a $60 credit. Believe me, if I had none of the previous I wouldnt have paid $125 for it. To me I got a really large nice piece of driftwood for $65. I am not trying to flame I am just stating my reasons for purchasing this piece and I thank you for your opinion.

"I mean this piece is nearly two feet wide by two feet deep"

HOW do you bring something like that back from South America?

thats good question I wish I could answer but I wasnt the one that got it. I was hoping somebody on here could verify as to what possible location if it is even possible. It doesnt really resemble any of the driftwood that I have seen on ebay and most of the ones on ebay are from the states.
