Is there enough room???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Really, you basically have two options here... keep the sevs and get a bigger tank (if you keep all 3, then 90 gallons or larger, imo) or get rid of the sevs. The tank you have now is not even suitable for one adult. Hope you get it worked out!

Agreed 100%

Its unhappy because its crammed in a 28 gallon tank with four other fish that are viewing it as a potential threat to their would be offspring. 28 gallons are not enough for one severurm long term, let alone 1 plus 2 breeding pairs.... Smh.

If you dont have any plans of upgrading to a larger tank and providing proper accomodations for the fish you have at the moment, them perhaps you shouldnt be keeping them at all. Look into some small tetras or those colorful guppies ;)

First of all, BlesOne, you are abusive. However, I'm not letting you're abusive words effect me. Especially since you have given me no useful information! Hahahaha

Second of all, thank you everyone else for getting your information to me in not such a degrading way...

I did some research... What caused the trio to break up was the fact that I just removed all of the previous clutch... I thought the trio would be happy that there would be no predators... I was wrong! Jewels need predators so they can release their built up aggression. Added Rosie barbs and the trio is back together! My Severum has always been happy. And I would never do ANYTHING to intentionally hurt my babies.
And back to the pet store... They basically are telling me that as long as your fish are getting along and are happy that you're doing good! And I am finding plenty of research articles telling me the same. ( I still have access to my college databases. Yes I am educated, I have my bachelors degree in nursing. No I'm not some hillbilly who bought some pretty fish and threw them in a bowl.) I spent a month setting up my tank in a family pet store and got their approval on everything from the gravel to their tank mates... So now I will take what they recommend with a grain of salt. And just an FYI the only fish that are full grown are my jewels. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. I plan on getting a new tank this December. And my tank is set up beautifully with tons and tons of hiding places. And the tank in my pics is of the old tank.

I'm glad you are getting a new tank soon, but this is honestly the dumbest thing I have ever read.

1. You have no idea how happy your fish are
2. Just because they are getting along now, doesn't mean in 2 months they will be

When we on this site talk about fish keeping, we are thinking about it in terms of how the fish will be doing long term. I could keep 10 baby umbees or doviis in a 10 gallon tank and they would look happy and get along. But how about in 1 month? or 2 months? Whatever store you went to and whatever you read online, disregard. I believe you are intelligent, I just think the information you got was bad.

Hmmm I'd have to debate this a little :) a friendly debate of course!
Signs your fish are happy:
Their colors are bright
Their fins are clean and not beat up
They are not hiding all day
Come to greet you at the front of the tank
Follow you around the room ... My favorite :)
Eat right away
Fins are displayed and not down
They find a pair easily and stay together

I was told these are all signs that your fish are happy healthy and well adjusted :)

And of course that doesn't mean they will be happy forever! Like my severum wasn't happy... So I found out why and fixed it.

Haha I don't want to debate you. Your fish, your choice. But let me say this: It is impossible to truly know if a fish is happy because they can't speak :)
