Is there guide line for stocking multiple cichlids?

you never know with cichlids, some say all male, some say lots of hiding places, some say grow them up together but in the end even that could not work and you need to be prepared to rehome

^absolutely agree. I also have been fairly successful doing as Duanes mentioned and not keeping multiple species of the same genus together.

I have great luck with cichlids not sure why but only had one so far fight to the death. I think having lots of room for them and lots of hidding places is good. Also sometimes when one gets beat up I remove it and have another tank or sump where other goes and heals then put them back later and things seem better with them. Having too many males of one breed is bad though. Right now I have been breeding allot of males and need to sell them as they are all a little crazy with each other.

I've had success with different looking cichlids of all sizes together with the exception of many CA cichlids.
