This post is missing the point, larger koks are a rarity. It reminds me of women who complain that they wont workout because they'll get too muscular, when in reality they couldnt get muscular if they tried. So enjoy your flowerhorn and dont fear the giant kok, you wont grow one overnight.

Errrr "women can't get muscular by working out"?

I always assumed kok size was proportional to health. Thus it showed you were a good owner, etc
I dont think thats correct (not as a standard anyway), there are plenty of very healthy flowerhorns out there without having big kok. I did read somewhere though that, similar to trimacs, thats how some big males express their dominance aesthetically.

LOL you're going to go and call people that like big kok's on their flowerhorns off their rocker and add a "no offense"? If you don't like the kok's, then buy the cheaper low grade ones. No need to insult people.

First of all, the thread is not for any debate with who likes what or who hates what and who likes what. The topic itself is clearly asking that how does this "kok" or nuchal hump itself becomes popular among the flowerhorn community. And yes, at first glance they look like ugly beast with a huge head(use to be one who doesn't like them myself). But the whole point is not about determining what they look like v.s. other pure/hybrids out there. Flowerhorn and its head means quality into the fish. Before flowerhorn itself was created, it was determine on how would they bring those head out into something that no man has ever created. And the bigger the head, the higher the quality your flowerhorn is. It's not a tumor or whatever you see it as. The main idea is - the bigger the head, the higher the quality the fish. They were bred for what they were suppose to be bred for, not a mistaken accident. To each and their own liking, flowerhorn is an art of perfection IMO. And why did I state that? No flowerhorn looks the same, all flowerhorns have different colorations and patterns + colors, and the point is to try and obtain that best color, head, fins, body, mouth, chin, eyes etc.
FYI - Red Monkey with a huge kok or even just a decent size kok is tough to come by. And if you did manage to run into one with a decent size head(half the size of your fist to a full fist) will probably run you anywhere between $300-$600 and up. :D

To simplify, koks are an indicator of health and well being, so yes the breeders will have the genetic trait maximum because they will pass on more size to their offspring.

I dont like grotesque koks on fish but I understand thats its a breeding issue.

thanks for the info guys....i think i will get a flowerhorn very soon and not worry too much about the kok. just wondering does anybody know of any really good places to get them besides cichlid world in michigan. i live in ohio so somewhere somewhat close would be nice..
