Hey guys...I just purchase 2 young polypterus ornatipinnis about 4" in size....I just release them now and one of them is hanging out on the top of the tank and just resting on the spray bar while the other is on the bottom resting on some drifwood.....Is this natural behavior, i thought they like to stay mainly on the bottom of the tank.....And what should I feed him??? the guy in the LFS told me that they are eating sinking pellets, should I stay with the same diet????...thanks for the advice....

I would say that the hanging out at the top of the tank is normal behaviour, my Senegal does that a fair bit. Feeding wise, just make sure you give them a variety of different foods. You could try feeding sinking carnivore or sinking cichlid pellets, bloodworms, prawn etc.

My senegals hang out at the top a lot after feeding, and my buettikoferi does it also, it's a normal behavior. As far as feeding right after getting them, it might take a couple days for them to settle in before eating.

They hang out wherever they want. I have one sen that loves hanging on one of my submersible filters. He lays there for hours. I have an ornate that relaxes vertically behind my piece of driftwood. My big sen is extremely active and is almost always swimming in the front of the tank to hang out with me.

It all depends on the individual. Plus, it might take them a few days to get used to their new home.

thanks for the reply guys...It looks really funny how mine just sit on top of the spray bar and just chill....When they get used to you would they come up and grab food on the surface?? cause I've got some clown loaches that are really active feeders...I'll try to feed them tommorow...are they fussy eaters like asian aro's?? hopefully they will take the pellets that the guy on the LFS told me that they fed on.....

Mine is always at the top resting on a piece of Driftwood

i see no problem.
my ornate does that.
he even lies on top of the filter with his body almost totally out of the water.

It's deffinitely natural behavior on their part. As for food though, I find that sinking pellets aren't always a good diet. With any fish it's always great to supplement. You could easily feed them some thawed krill, bloodworms, brine shrimp...

Hello,

when i'm looking backwards at this moment (where one of my tanks is standing) i see all of my bichirs (except my teugelsi) chilling near the surface ... it's normal to me. They all have a healthy appetite and growing strong (my lap from 20cm in November 2007 to 27cm today). It seems to be strange, but they don't like the hiding places made of a driftwood construction.
It's normal that sometimes bichirs didn't eat anything when set into a new tank. They seem to be very sensible ... it's no reason to get in trouble about - bichirs can stay without food over a long period. They can also feed massive portions of food when they feel so ...

Greetings

Uwe
