Is there such a thing as a centerpiece fish for my subtropical SA 75?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Firemouths aren't real nasty but tank temps need to stay around 78f

I'm digging the acaras (electric blue or blue) and think the blue would look great in my tank. I may even consider a heater so I can keep one. Will continue researching temperature ranges for the blue acara.

Since the acara would be the only cichlid, I think aggression towards the tetras and corys would be minimum. Does gender matter? Would a single male be fine or should I stick with only female(s)?

I had a male and he never touched any of my fish, he did however put the JD and convict in their place when they started fights.

It's probably safer with a female, but if it was me i'd have no qualms about trying a male :)

I personally think cichlids need 70 +
they will live ok but think not thrive in colder temp?

All my research says that cichlids that are native to the southern parts Uruguay and Argentina do fine with cooler temps and some need an even cooler winter period. Which makes sense because my dad lives in Monte Video where the average winter temperature is around 40* F.

However, if I decided on an Acara, I would add a heater.

If any of this is wrong, feel free to let me know. As I mentioned in the original post, this is my first time with anything other than NA natives.

let us know how you get on, I have ebas so show some pics if you get :)

Cichlasoma bimaculatum aka black acara would do well in a sub tropical tank. You wouldn't need a heater in the tank.

That is an awesome tank lekkiandgas! Love the plants too. I've never had good luck with plants, so I'm envious of those who do.

So it looks like my choices are:

Electric Blue/Blue Acara
Black Acara
Australoheros facetus

For those of you that have owned any of these, can I keep more than one female together? Say 3? Or should I stick with a single specimen regardless of sex?

Once I decide, what is the best way to find one? I really don't want to buy a large group and grow them out (doing that now with a batch of Dollar Sunfish). Could I just buy one and keep it regardless of sex? Is it possible to buy only females?
