My wife picked up some fish labeled as Barred Red Devils F1 from Rusty Wessel. Is there such a fish or did the the guy just call his Midas Red Devils. Either way we are good as we have Both pure Midas and Red Devils. Is it wise to cross the barred fish with the colored strains or best not too?

Wow that was quite a read I'll try and get some picks and post them right away. If they are Labaitus can they be crossed with our red variants. Or if they are Midas not good with their latin name sorry could they be bred to them. The reason I ask is we have 2 Midas but not sure what the smaller one is male or female and I would like to get our midas breeding agin.
I had know idea though that some of these reputable collectors would mess things up this bad Was the case of Teejays devils ever straightened out.

Now I wonder what we have is there really a barred labaitus?

There are A. Labiatus' of the barred variant as well as the red/orange and piebald variant. Primarily comes down to the collection point
if they were purchased directly from Rusty Wessel, I would feel comfortable with them being labeled properly if it were me. Rusty is very well established in the trade, I highly doubt he would tarnish his own name to make a quick buck/sale

I believe there are barred labiatus variants.

Bill - it is still best not to cross them with your current labs from a purist standpoint. Because there are so many labiatus/citrinellus variants, many prefer only to breed those that were obtained from the same collection points.

Lou - did you read the links RD provided? The backstory does seem odd.

I know or hope that our current lbas and cits are pure as they are from COA and there reputation is good. How ever if it is best to keep these seperate I will do.

Bill - I am not saying that your current fish aren't "pure," or even that the new barred fish you got aren't. What I am saying is that if your current labs are not barred, and you think this is a barred variant, then they are likely from different collection points, essentially making them different fish. This is not to say that they are not "pure."

-more importantly, only breeding Lab x Lab and Cit x Cit regardless of collection points. I believe this was mis-typed? ( no offense, just trying to clarify)

I did not, I'm speaking strictly from past experiences when speaking of the Amphilophus genus with Jeff Rapps and Don Conkel

Since they are F1, barred Amphilophus sp (red devil is a catchall name), and from a respected guy like Rusty Wessel, crossing them with an aquarium strain, or midevil (to any really serious cichlid keeper) would give them a much lessor value. (to me a cross would make them worthless)
I suppose to amateurs it wouldn't matter.
Below is a barred Amphilophus sp "Amarillo" there are many others.
