Bill .... this is why it's always a good idea to know the provenance of this fish that you buy, or even if there is any. Otherwise after some time this info can get lost, or at the least become very confusing as to what was collected where. Same holds true for the carpintis that you are breeding - there are numerous strains and many of them look almost identical to each other. Keep pumping those Esondido out!
With regards to the midas that you originally got from Ivan, the female breeder was an F1 or F2 "red morph" from Rapps, the male was a creamsicle that came from Conkel. I might still have pics of the pair somewhere? Don Conkel had kept and bred his creamsicle strain for years in his vats/ponds, and has them listed on his website as Lago de Nicaragua. Jeff's midas have been sourced from both Lake Managua, and Lake Nicaragua, so unless Ivan has that info (doubtful) one will never know. So all of those offspring that you originally had and sold approx. 5 yrs ago (I have a male from that group) would all be pure fish, but basically an aquarium strain at this point. No collection site attached.
COA was, and still is selling midas that originated from Lake Arenal.
Lake Arenal is basically a land locked reservoir that was enlarged when a hydro electric dam was built back in the late 1970's. According to William Bussing (a well respected researcher in this area) in his book that was first published in 1987 "Peces de las aguas continentales de Costa Rica",
he states;
"the A. citrinellus found in Lake Arenal were probably introduced by man."
If the amphilophus in Lake Arenal were in fact introduced by man many years ago, then I think that it's safe to assume that those original fish would have been collected & transported from the closest place possible, which in this case would have been Lake Nicaragua.
At this point, with the Amphs that you currently have, best to just refer to them as a pure strain, with the lines all originating with wild fish from Central America. If anyone wants additional info you can mention the various vendors names, COA, Rapps, Conkel - or send them a link to this thread. lol
