I put a 30 gallon filter on my ten gallon tank. The ten gallon filter didnt seem to be doing the job and i was having to change the filter every week or so. was puttin the larger filter on the small tank a good idea or a no-go?

I don't see how it could be bad?

This question gets asked all the time and the answer is always the same. Unless the current is too strong, it isn't going to hurt.

its not going to hurt, but too much filtration wont help you any. in your case, a 30g filter for a 10g tank is nowhere near overfiltered. maybe if you had something rated for like 200g on a 10g, then maybe.

most people will try to get filtration rated for 2~3x their tank size

Yep, I would agree.
My LFS has a 500gal feeder with another 1000gal in filtration.

If a filter has too much surface area it may be a problem. With very large filters relative to tank size just check ammonia and nitrite levels to determine whether the filter size is ok. You need to wait till the filter is cycled in though to pass a judgement of this sort. 6-8 weeks should be enough time to cycle the filter.

the filter was on an established 30g tank so i just moved it over to the 10g.The only problem i have found is that my hood wont fit around the filter because the space isnt big enough.

i put a 60 gallon filter on a 10 gallon and it worked fine for me :) so id say its perfectly alright. the ammonia and everything was alright. id say the bigger the better. and from my experience always go atleast one size up on filters to be safe.
