is there such thing as too much filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can't have too much filtration, but you can have too much current. Depending on what you intend to keep, it might be much. But a filter meant for a 30g on a 10g is not a problem at all. I once had an Emperor 400 on a 20g. It was perfectly fine. The best filter I ever had on that tank.

Agreed with all of the above, always use more than what the box says it's rated for. As someone mentioned a filter for "Up to 30 gallons" isn't even close to over filtering a 10 gallon. I'd say it's just about right actually.

I noticed that the filter keeps the tank alot cleaner. I have 2 platys, 7 male/1 female guppy, and a cory cat. No one has gotten stuck to it yet so im guessing its going to work out perfectly :)

I think I would have to agree. Either go up one size or double up. On all my tanks I have at least two filters. On the others I have a filter 3 of 4 times bigger plus a powerhead. On my 55 I have a powerhead sponge filter a airpowered sponge filter and a emperor 450. Works great! Oh and I have a 30gal filter on my 10gal and it works like a charm. A little extra current is good for the fish. Just make sure they have a little space to "chill".

I don't believe anyone has mentioned this to you, but just because you are over filtrated doesn't mean you can relax on your water changes. Only thing that's going to keep your aquarium healthy and your fish healthy is by doing water changes. Doesn't matter how good of a filter you have, your water can still become toxic by waste. Make sure before every water change you do a water parameter test and do one after. I do one every other day or every 2 days. Also make sure you vacuum your gravel for buried waste and left over food.

Take me for example, I am way overstocked, and I have more filtration than I need for a 68G. But my Nitrates will go from 0 to 10ppm in a period of 3-4 days. When I notice something like that has happened in my tank, I find the time to do a 75% water change.

Of course you can, do'nt believe me? Try this put 4 AC110 power filters on a 10 gallon tank and see what happens
