well small tanks such as 36" or 30" long do not need center bracing, but top and bottom frame bracing is neccessary. Tanks that are longer than 4 feet need center bracing. In addition, center bracing has nothing to do with glass thickness, its built for the pressure of the water.

sorry should have specified my tank was a 40g long (4'x1'). From my understanding the purpose of the brace is to prevent the glass from bowing under the pressure of the water. Thicker glass = more resistant to bowing. I don't profess to be an expert tank builder, but I have seen plenty of people with rimless 200-300g's and its my understanding that with proper glass thickness center bracing is not needed (at least on glass aquariums).

i dont have any help or info on fixxing your tank.. but i wanna put my 2 cents in...

i had a 55 gallon bust on me last thanksgiving, and it was a horriable mess..i lost fish i had shipped here from up north, and had water in my carpet for weeks.. im not even gonna go into the smell i had, in my bedroom for weeks..
when i get a new tank, or a tank i just am unsure about, i ask my self
1. is it worth this tank busting while im gone and loseing all my fish?
2. is it worth this tank busting while im home, and loseing my fish?
3. i stop and think how bad a spill of 1 gallon of milk is, and multiplty it by the size of the tank, and and ask myself, is taking a chance on a tank im already unsure about worth chancing my wooden floors, carpet, furniture etc.

my words of advice to anyone that has a unsure tank question, is "ITS NEVER WORTH IT.. BUY A NEW TANK.".unless you are a professional tank maker.

i know its easier said then done.. i just bought a 45 set up last week and chipped it as i was setting it up.right in the silicone seal..i dont have the cash to buy another, so its a small crab habitat..

good luck on what you decide to do..
