Is this a bad thing ....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bro you should spend more time choosing what you want, don't skit around from this to that. Sure no harm done if you sell him and start again but take your time, research make sure you know what you want and buy smart.

Fish keeping is about the long game. The big fish of MFK that we choose to keep will live a LONG time. They will be boring at times, but they are fish, what do you expect. If you change too quick flitting from this to that you will never see them develop. Seeing a fish develop, grown, change colour, grow a personailty, pair up, breed and so on IS the game. They don't all come out of the box with everything ready to go.

Take your time. Choose something you can keep through the boring times and go with it. Longterm is better for the fish.

Just my 2cents.

I agree with boz above... I have fish Ive have from from small to large and those are the ones I tend to look at while I'm in the tank room. I have some very nice fish that I got at a large size. (They are probably better quality than the ones I have grown out myself) but for myself and my own satisfaction I still take more pride in the ones that started small with no color and just looked like little minnows.

Maybe you would like your RD if you had gotten it at 2" and grown it out..
However ever since I've gotten into cichla there really isn't another species out there that will hold my interest like they do... So you also have to get what will go with your personality

I bought $75 worth of angelfish several months back at pea size and grow them out to half dollar size. Had to do two culls and the 24 I started with dropped to 11 after culls for genetic defects. I thought they would be an awesome top dweller. After they hit quarter size, I got bored with them because they were not what I was expecting. Sold them off and broke even, so it worked out.

Boz makes a point about doing plenty of research, but sometimes you run into a situation like mine where you do plenty of research and think it will be awesome to have, then realize you don't have any interest in it. As long as you make sure the fish have a good home beyond your own, it will all work out in the end.

Rehome your RD (keep in mind you may not get all of your money back) and look into something new. If you are going to be bored with the fish, you are more likely to neglect its care, so you should look into finding him a home where he will be more appreciated.

I think that's a pretty normal part of the 'explore & learn' process. you already developed interest in a certain species, then had to switch it up.
might take a little time to find what works for you.
I understand how you feel about the Gift aspect though. can't believe this, but my husband just brought me a fish & I'm going through a similar thing. not sure what I will do.
LOL @the coincidence.

I got the same prob with my jd. Love him but he's boring the crap outta me because he only stays in caves or hides. Comes out for bloodworms and only bloodworms. Only time I can see him is if I have an empty tank/no decor

This is why having more than one tank can be oh so important for us keepers... at least this way, if one fish or tank is boring at a specific time, we always have our other tanks to keep us entertained to balance things out...

even if i were to get rid of him i dont know what i would get instead ... i wanted a wolf fish but desided againts it because they are not active swimmers

gulper cats have the same problem as wolfs ... not active unless feeding time

ive had exodons before .. and would like a shoal ... but nobody ever has more then like 10 in stock ... i would have orderd them but aquascape only had 6 last time i checked .. and 6 in that whole 75 would leave alot to be desired aswell

i would like to try my hand at some fatf's or a payara, i know they grow bigger then the tank i have will allow ... im building a 600gal ... but look at my current living situation it might not work because of the old floor joist

i could just grow out and sell ... i know that it would be easy to sell them once they hit a good 10" on here
