Is this a good deal for a discus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To me it is a matter or a pure breed dog versus a mutt. Generally on a pure breed you will pay more and get the assurance that it will prolly not have any major issue

Actually, that's not even a valid comparison. We aren't talking about pure fish and some sort of ugly hybrid. It comes down to fish that weren't cared for and raised properly, and are now stunted with bad body shape that won't grow to adult size and have dark eyes that are too big for the body (healthy discus should have bright, clear eyes, not pitch black). Hardly the same thing as a purebred dogs vs a mutt. More like purebred dog vs deformed purebred dog with health problems.

Not really comparable here, but...

Complete opposite. The very nature of pure bred dogs leads to more health concerns down the line, not less. Look at the information sheets on any pure breed, it should have a section that'll list major health concerns associated with that particular breed. Mutts tend to be healthier since they have a more diverse genetic past.

no one is saying that those fish will die. if you can be happy with 4" adult discus that won't show thier natural beauty then buy them. personally, I would'nt take those fish for free.

Exactly, the thing that confuses me about discus keeping is how opposed people are to caring for stunted discus. I would buy the discus in the pictures because they are affordable, i think they are still attractive, and the stunting really doesnt decrease the actual value of the fish to me. If people think stunted discus still look cool, they should have no problem buying them. they are still great fish and interesting because they have all the same behaviors as healthy discus

I'm pretty sure other people will agree with me, I'd rather spend a bit more money on fish that will less likely run into problems along the way. I'm not condoning the keeping of stunted Discus, I'm just stating that if you get higher quality Discus, they will definitely do better than stunted Discus.

And as for the people opposing keeping stunted Discus.. I'll put this in simple terms. I'm a guy and I like women. Doesn't mean I'll settle for any woman. I want the BEST one out there(or closest to it), not some sickly midget one.

i will skip those fish and look for different ones with bright and healthy discus. those ones will give you more headache and cot more $$$ for medication. I m not sure how they are doing in that tank, to me if I buy those, i have to buy a hospital tank with metro, deworm.... before you even put in the main tank. also 2 cents worth.

ps: there are couple guys selling discus in market place.
