Hey guys! Just seeing if anybody knows if this is a red bellied Pacu or red bellied piranha? I recently purchased some and they aren't as aggressive as another set I purchased. Thanks!! $_57.JPG

It definitely looks as though you have a Piranha on your hands!

Diddy,if nothing else you should be able to tell just by looking at the teeth!

Thanks guys! I had a hard time believing it was a piranha because of the price. $20 sound right for a 1inch juvenile? They aren't as aggressive as another set of piranahas i had growing up as a kid. I remember picking up my first set, and when I was transporting them from the LFS to my house, they were trying to bite my fingers through the plastic bag. It could of been the age of the fish I think. The first set of piranahas back then were just a little older and these guys seem very calm but maybe because they are younger. Should I expect them to be alot more aggressive as they age? Thanks guy for the responses!

I think it depends on the species as some tend to be more aggressive than others.

They are still young, give them sometime to get use with new environment, they're aggressive but not overly aggressive compare to other piranha species and keep them well fed or they will start salvage each other, good luck!

I don't have much experience keeping P's but the upturned protruding lower jaw identifies it to me as a P rather then a Pacu. In the tri state area you can usually get a 1-2 inch RBP juvy for between $8-$15 but prices can differ when it comes to fish depending on area. Most RBP's are fairly skittish even as they get on in size though this can be overcome to an extent by making sure there's cover in their tank and they're kept in a decent sized school so they can feel more secure. If you wanted an aggressive single P there are plenty of alternatives such as Elongatus and Rhombeus just to name two. We have a section dedicated to Piranha and there's plenty of knowledgeable people that frequent that section, so I'll see about getting a Mod to move your thread over there so you can more help if you have more questions.

Redbelly Piranha - and yes $20 is pretty standard for this size - even a bit high. (LFS price.)
A Pacu would be about $4 or $5 for a larger fish, in comparison. (But don't identify fish by price!)

Thanks again for the reply. I was planning on buying a few more of these if these are for sure Piranhas. I've had them for about a month now. I really hope they grow just as fast as I've heard.
