Is this a parasite?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are many different species of these parasitic crustaceans (genus Argulus or not), and the Australian version, may look entirely different than the north American type but still require the same, or similar meds.
Because they are crustaceans (even though they might not look like it) all need to produce chitin for their shells, so the best meds will contain chitin inhibitors.
Some of the best Chitin inhibitors contain organs-phoshates (carcinogenic) so may be out lawed in your country, this is why I suggested contacting a koi club.

Metroplex is what I used for hex. For Epsom salt you want to make a bath for them. Use one table spoon per gallon and let them swim in it for a half hour. If they look distressed remove them but they should be fine. Hope this helps

So 2 weeks has past since my original post. I had not seen any more worm like creatures untill yesterday. When i checked on my tank yesterday morning my ghost knife was swimming around quite crazy and seemed irritated. I removed him and put him a hospital tank. Upon closer inspection he had something that looked like worm attached around his gills. My prazipro had just arrive in the mail (almost 2 weeks early) so i dosed his hospital tank, he was not eating and still swimming round in circles. This morning he was doing much better eating and swimming round like normal. No worms were on his gill any more however i did find something floating round the tank (see pics) which looked like what was attached to the texas fin in my first post. Anchor worm??? does prazipro treat anchor worms???what ever was troubling my BGK has been solved with fresh water and prazipro.

White stringy poo has still been a problem for some of my fish. I have treated with 2 or 3 rounds of flubenzdole. It hasnt gottwn any worse but hasnt got better either. I stripped any remaining flubenzendole out of my tank with carbon. main tank was started on prazipro treatment today. How long with prazipro take to clear up internal parasite? is there anyway to know if its working?

It could be that you broke off the tail section of Lernaea, leaving the head in the fish.
Lernaea are multi-stage crustaceans , and the stages look very different.
There is a stage where a double tail hangs off the fish.
Potasium permanganate is often recommended by koi keepers, the fish are dipped, and the tank also treated. Just pulling them off, or just a dip, leaves eggs and larvae in the tank to reinfect. And if the head of the parasite is buried deep in the fish, secondary infection is common.
Doseage depends on weight of fish.
Look up Lernaea/koi for recommendations, or talk to members of a local koi club for specifics.

If you still think it is anchor worms, can you get Hikari Cyropro? I'm pretty sure that prazipro doesn't treat anchor worms.
