If the tank is flat, level, and square on the stand, then I don't think there should be any issue, other than the water line will seem angled.

If the tank is sitting at all skewed, crooked, or whatever (where its twisting in any dimension), then I would shim it, or adjust somehow to make the tank sit correctly.

Good point! I'll take a closer look tonight.

And nice work on that cabinet, did you do the work yourself?

I wish...a friend built it, although I did contribute some dumb ideas :D. He just opened a lfs (http://atypicalfish.com/Home.html) and does custom stand/canopy also.

I wouldn't worry about it: 1/4" off isn't much...and you're using styro.

Matt

I sure hope so...have till this weekend to decide what to do.

Does anybody else have similar situations....and what happened (or didn't)?

 I wouldn't mess with shims for only 1/4" you should be able to fill the tank enough not to notice. As long as the edges of tank are sitting flat on the stand you're good.

That's a really nicely built stand, how did you get the crain in your house to move it?

My 220 has been uneven by 1/4-3/8" for almost 3 yrs. I had a 72g bowfront that cracked from an uneven floor that made the stand twist. You couldn't see it, but over several months one of the doors was getting harder and harder to open. Than crack! I put a new one in it's place with styro and it's been fine for 1.5yr.

shim it. it may not be a problem but with that rimless tank you will always see that the tank and stand are slightly off with the water level do it now before it is all filled up

^Agreed. IMO, 1/4" in 6' is not a structural issue.

My house will rise and settle that much from winter to summer lol.

Thanks! LOL that's the heaviest stand I ever moved. Usually stand is the easy part compared to the tank. Not this one!

Sorry to hear about your 72g. So the old tank cracked, and you put in a new tank with styro, and it's been fine?

My friend is working on a canopy now so I won't see the top of the water or the tank....shimming would just for safety purpose...

Agreed. With 4"x4" posts, that stand is way overbuilt and will hold the majority of the weight with ease. If it were a cheap/thin material used I would shim it, but in this it's more for peace of mind if you do.

Thanks Justin. Did you mean the tank will be fine as long as the stand holds?

I found a plan for what looked like an overbuilt stand. My friend started building it and half way through he told me he felt the posts were too close together. Turned out the plan was for an 8' tank

What I am saying in short, is the tank will be 100% fine so long as the stand holds. (it would take a fire or daisy cutter missle to bring down that stand bro, its WAY overbuilt) My old 220 gallon was above the garage floor a little over an 1/8" in the from left corner and no issues 1.5 years later (with no styro). The 4"x4" posts are VERY strong and being spaced so closely together, will hold the integrity of the stand even if you don't shim it. I would not worry one bit.

ps - yet again I have tank envy... Nice work Peter! ;)
