Is this a red terror

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The trade name "red terror" is interchangeable with festae, and uropthalmus in many places.
Your pic looks like uropthalmus (AKA Mayan) as Convict Cichlids stated, to me.
And to me uropthalmus is at least as, if not more desirable, than festae. I have ,kept both, and have festae now.
Here are some uropthamus in their natural habitat, I snorkeled with and filmed last Nov.

That's a Mayan.

I agree that LFS should no what their selling. Everything should be sold with a scientific name.

There's no shame in owning a Mayan cichlid... I got two gorgeous pairs of wild caught Festae but if I saw a nice Mayan I'd snap it up.

Def Mayan... they are also called "Red Terrors" as Festae are, so if the lfs was selling them as that they are not wrong... If the lfs sold them as Festae thats a different story. Anyway, nice pick up!!

I picked one up about 3 months ago. Labeled a red terror but when I asked the worker there he told me they weren't true red terror. So Google around and found out it was a mayan. I wasn't disappointed one bit. I think it's a beautiful fish. Mines about 5" right now and the king of my 240 until both my male and female jaguar Cichlids grow more. Nice pickup op

In 99.99% of cases it's not an LFS selling one fish as another, it's and LFS using an interchangeable common name to describe both because they do not know any better. It's our job as hobbiests to use proper names and help eliminate common names all together. The only way for a market to change behaviors is to follow the money from sellers who know what they are asking for. When an LFS loses a sale due to a common name and it is explained to them, they change. When people buy it anyway and then ask other people if it's a festae they encourage the same behavior for the next buyer.

(speaking in general terms, not at the OP) OP is clearly asking prior to purchase.
