is this a red texas cichlid?

Looks like you got exactly what you paid for, a first generation red texas, unfortunately you paid quite a bit for it. It could still fade and become a very nice looking fish. It does appear to be lacking in pearls, but pearls is only part of the equation. IMO a non faded RT is just as much a dud as an RT with no pearls, or an RT that is overloaded with pearls, and lacking in red.

Both RT and SRT are terms used and often misused to describe numerous grades of these types of fish. In Asia that SRT posted above, would also be considered a fairly low grade specimen by most hobbyists who keep these types of fish. In fact, the majority of high quality SRT never make it to North America, they remain in Asia.

Enjoy your new fish, and post back with updated pics.

Spot on! Also never buy a fish ever without pictures. When I sell fish especially fry where I have lets say two dozen I won't take individual pics but show some how they look. I would then take the ones they bought and send them pictures. Normally show them a video and have them screen shot which ones they like but for the most part the ones I sell are very close in terms of beauty lol

Lesson learned no big deal.

It's first generation red texas. For the future, if you're looking to buy red texas, make sure it's not first generation. It takes a lot of breeding for them to churn out even just a few masterpieces/ manage to create a batch with the characteristics of both fading and pearling. Most F1 red texas, which I categorize as the direct offspring of a male carpintis crossed with some kind of red/fading fish (typically blood parrots, or mammons if it's a quality breeding), will turn out looking like yours did. Either some pearls and no fading, fading but not many pearls.

On the plus side, it's turning out to be a nice looking fish. What size is he now?
