Looks like a pure black belt to me.

Have kept a few BB before and this guy does have the shape but the colors are off. His tail is yellowish and his body has a silver titanum blue color to it.

I'd have to say Hybrid. It looks a little bit like both to me with it looking more like a blackbelt.

Yea

If it was a BB I might keep it.

I agree it doesn't look like a lot of the BB's you see, but IMO, it's still likely just a BB. They are the most widely distributed CA cichlid, and as a result there is a great degree of variability in their coloration. I've had some with lots of color, little color, big belts, small belts, red tails, pink tails, etc.

Here are two different varieties, one from Guatemala and one from Nicaragua. The one from Nic is sort of the exact opposite of the one above:

Got a tank with darker substrate? Maybe he'll darken up a little... I agree that the shape looks exactly like a BB...

But so many of the Paratheraps genus cross its hard to just assume he isn't hybrid.

regani is Vieja. They have a thinner body than Paratheraps. This one doesnt quite have the body shape of a bifas.
