Is this a Synspilum or...?

In person, it looks a lot like your female except it has blue fins instead of red and the blue spangles which look spectacular. It looks like maybe it has some black belt in it. I just brought it home so I will get some more pics when it settles in.

Well, I am having a rough time getting a good pic of him now as he is really shy. Hopefully that will change once he settles in some more.

There is a variety of synspilum that have spangles. I can't remember where it's from, Rio Usamacinta I think, but it's often called synspilum sp. 'shinespots'. They were a big deal in Europe for a while. You see them over here from time to time. I think Jeff Rapps had them a couple of months ago too.

BUY THAT FREAKIN' FISH ASAP, BEFORE I CAN BOOK A FLIGHT!

Just what I was going to say. Looks like a variant of synspilum that I've seen labeled as "Shine Spot".

Interesting. So maybe it's not a hybrid after all. He? is starting to come out of hiding when i am in the other room, but as soon as I go near the tank, its back under the rock. Best I have gotten so far. I really should get a camera, no?

Edit: google image search for Rio Usumacinta synspilum came up with this... http://www.cichlidenseite.de/berichte/synspila/syn002.jpg
