is this a venezuelan?

And they are very owner responsive in my experience. They are always paying more attention to me when I'm in the room than any other fish I own except for one of my datnoids (who's my oldest fish currently).

See, mine only comes to me when he wants food. Aside from that he just lays there like a lazy loaf.

Interesting. I've owned 6 different venezuelans prior to the 2 currently in my tank, and they have been far and away the most people-responsive fish in the tank, and not just for food. They're always watching me to see what I'm doing, even when its obvious that I won't be feeding them.

The venny I had the longest got up to about 14" long, and was a beast of a fish. He was very calm and quiet once he took over the tank, but he was always watching me, and always active whenever I paid attention to the tank. Still one of the most favorite fish I've ever kept, and I still regret trading him off to someone else.

I'm hoping the two I have now grow up to be as nice as he was. Gorgeous fish with lots of personality, IME.

What kind of tankmates do you have yours with, and what size is he?

@Spadoc79, Hes about 5 inches

@Conner, Hes active more at night than doing the day. It kind of sucks considering he's going to get so big. I have him in with a L-52 Butterfly Pleco, a Clown Pleco, and a Salvini Cichlid. He is without a doubt one of my favorite fish I have ever owned. Its strange because he was so active at the fish store. I went there and saw him and a buddy for a few weeks before I purchased them both. Don't get my wrong, the fish is healthy(or from what I can see) he eats, a lot, is active at night time, and he knows who I am and what the bag of sinking pellets looks like. I do however feel his borderline retarded or something. Because 40% of the time he cant see his food. He doesn't have glassed over eyes or anything. I don't know... Just my strange fish lol

He should get more comfortable being out and about in the daytime the bigger he gets. I got my current two at about 4 inches, and they were both very shy until they got up to about 6". Once they hit that mark, they got much more confident, and now they almost never hide, and are always front and center whenever I'm messing around with the tank.

They go bonkers when I get the food out. As soon as I start dropping food into the tank, about 8 of my fish start going crazy at the surface, and the two venny's are right in the middle of it.

They especially go wild for the freeze-dried krill. Which is also good for bringing them up to the surface if you want to get them out a little more.

Mine liked to hide under rocks peaking his head out until he got to 10-12". At that point he started swimming around in the middle of the tank in the wide open areas. He also ate about 6-7 of my convicts and my salvini, so I would watch that Salvini of yours. Fortunately for me I've been needing to pair down my Convicts because I had way too many due to their crazy breeding. The Pike is my most active fish for sure and will always follow me as I walk by the tank. He's definitely my favorite fish that I have had so far.

Definately have individual personalities I've got a pair that are about 8-9 inches and they go bonkers whenever I enter the room but hide if anyone else walks in. The wierd thing about mine is they don't seem to like the larger tanks, they're most active in their 55 gallon growout tank. I've had them for a month in a 240 and they barely ate and hid all day. Put them back in the 55 and within a day they're back to normal =/

Recently hes become a little more active. As far as being aggressive, he hasnt gone at any of the other cichlids. However, he has eaten two of my rainbowfish, but hasnt eaten my clown pleco, who is smaller than the rainbows.
