Is this an Armatus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bro we need a better angle, preferably from the side.
  1. What color is the adipose tail?
  2. Is the fish swimming level or head down?
  3. Behind the gills there's a black marking, is the marking a half moon crescent or a blotch?

Thanks for your replies McPhishy and xaznkewlguyx.

It's so hard to get a side view picture of the fish since he keeps on moving around and at times just hovers at an angle. I hope someone can give a definite ID of the fish.

Thanks!

You can ID it yourself:
scomb vs armatus

Armatus:
Red/orange adipose fin
black slash behind gill plate
white edged caudal fin
clear caudal fin base turning to black
extensions in center of tail fin (larger individuals)
swims at a level swimming angle
larger jaw
down turned head

Scomb:
Black adipose fin
black blotch behind gill plate
black caudal fin base turning to clear
no extensions in caudal fin
smaller jaw
upturned head
swims at a slightly head down angle (most of the time)
more pronounced hump behind head

How can you even tell? The caudal fin going to black?
Because he had one, so he didn't even need to open a textbook, or run search engine to ID a fish :grinno:

You missed Tatauia... Obviously, the fish in pix is not a Scomb, and it look much more an Armatus than a Tatauia.
