Is this Arowana has drop-eye?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would call that early signs of drop-eye. Check what your feeding him and make sure it's not fatty foods. Drop-eye is the build-up of fat behind the eye, causing it to look down. There is no known cure however, and no known "cause" either. The suspected cause is diet, but some believe it's just genetic's over generation's of captive aro breeding. Until someone gets 10 silver arowanas, raises them all in separate tanks, uses a different diet for each and waits a year, I guess we'll never know :)

and manages to make sure they don't bang into the glass hard, the theory i've heard (from Hao) is that it's caused by head trauma

Another interesting one; thanks for sharing that I've never heard of it. One theory I've heard is that it is because of arowana's being kept in glass tanks, they are looking to the side, which is unnatural to a species that scans the surface, staring upward looking for bugs. Some would say you should put bright lights on the bottom of the tank to "force them to look up" but to me that just sounds crazy.

Personally, I don't believe you can stop aro's from getting drop-eye. I only believe you can keep it from happening to an extreme degree (going blind and such).
