IS THIS BEAST REALLY A MAYAN CICHLID??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah its just a big old male, looks like a public aquarium fish and they always end up supersized. for all you know that fish could be as old as 10 years, it has that characteristic hump that old cichlids have

It looks like the high bodied variant I saw snorkeling in Cenote Escondido just south of Tulum, although much better fed and more striped than the wild version.

I believe I read an article saying that in the faster flowing more disturbed rivers cichlids will be of a more compressed variety, and in more still deeper waters they will have a more high and rounded physique.

You are right. Looks like none i have seen. But it either is a mayan or a cross with lota of mayan in it.

I love it,manyways.

Yes cenote Escondido has no noticeable current (at least to me) and is deep (over 50ft).
The cenote (of the 4) I snorkeled in this year, where I saw the largest uros was Eden, they seemed to stay at depths of over 15 ft but would roam over large areas ( hundreds of yards), while most JDs hung in more shallow areas, and had smaller territorys, maybe the size of a car .
There were large populations of JDs, and very few uros.
