But adding a small school of tetras to begin with and slowly increasing my stock until I've emptied th

Yes with the Tetra but keep in mind you will be doing a fish in cycle. As Midwater Midwater stated add fish slowly.

Ok so not ideal but fingers crossed. Maybe 10 small black neon to start and slowly move fish from existing tank after that. Thank both of you for the info, maybe I'll stop asking these questions now...

When you added your cycled sponge you should also have added an ammonia source to "feed" the BB within. That was the time to add your small fish, not days later.

The fact that you didn't add an ammonia source would mean the BB on your sponge would have gone dormant at best, or completely died off at worst, so getting readings to suggest the tank is cycled, I would say, are false.

A plausible explanation for this could be that you have nitrate in your tap water. Some of us unfortunately do.

Easy way to find out is to do a nitrate test on your tap water to confirm, or rule out.

Thanks and I should have mentioned I've been dropping fish food in to hopefully feed the BB. Ive tested my tap and it reads 0 nitrates. So I'll test this morning and if it checks out I'll add a few tetra.

Well, we got 5 black neons and I've ordered 15 more that should be here Wednesday. I'll do a 4 week qt and then I'll start transferring my other fish. Thank all of you for the info and patience.
