IS THIS DEFFO MANA OR A HYBRID?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Because I have had plenty of Mana both in my own private selection and in the aquatics dept I used to run, and all the pure Jags are much much more mottled in colour than this. They also tend to be silver where as he is yellow. Also the Jags have a mottled line down there sifde where as this is a straight bar like a Dovii has.

Also the fins are blue tinged. Now I know before anyone tells me that no 2 fish are identical and colours vary. But this I still dont believe is a pure bred Mana, He has a wicked set of teeth on him as well. (again I know Jags have a decent pair as well)

I am happy if it is just a mana as It means I dont have to worry about an even bigger tank.

Why do you believe it's a hybrid? Did you buy it from a place carrying Jag hybrids? It looks like a Jag to me.

No I bought it from a shop that has won awards for its cichlid stocks and they now have them advertised as Dovii but when I bought them they were not exactly sure.

I know that they are not Dovii at all due to shape of mouth especially. He has a Betta style mouth where as Dovii have equal length.

I have 3 now in the tank. 2 of them are stone wall jags without a doubt, full mottled colour all over, they are scared senseless of him.

I understand where you're coming from. But I have seen Jags with blue coloration in their fins. Honduran Jags have very beautiful coloration. It looks like a Jag to me but I don't know where you purchased the fish or who supplies their store. That's another reason why a lot of hobbyists will order fish from a reputable source to limit the chances of getting something other than what they actually want. So like you said, if you're not really worried about if it is or isn't a Jag it doesn't matter. Hopefully it will grow up to be a very nice fish regardless.
Okay...I just read your post that you wrote while I was still typing this. If the store isn't sure what they have, which they clearly don't if they are changing the labeling on the tank, then you are justified in your doubts.

This is what I would class as a typical Mana, which mine clearly looks nothing like.

It has zero of the markings on the fins on on the body that make it look like a pure Jag. It is about 4" roughly and by that stage I would be expecting it to start taking on its adult colouration.

I am only looking for opinions that is all. I as I have said am happy for it to be just a Jaguar. But I would assume that you can see my point when you compare the 2 pictures.

Yeah they believe them to be Dovii. I said that I am 100% sure that they are not but they also had similar sized Jags in stock and the 2 are nothing alike.

I used to have no problem ordering Dovii in for the shop. I used to get them from a place called Neil Hardy Aquatica in the UK and he alwas had them in stock and they were little belters.

I also got my adult pair from him as they used to be kept in huge pond vats under the main tanks and they were monsters.

I just cant seem to get hold of a Dovii no matter what I do lol.

Everytime I get shops to order them in they always come in as Mana.

Think thats someone telling me that I shouldnt bother trying anymore :)

Saves the 250 uk gal I was gonna get .

The Jag and co are being grown out in a 4-2-2 at the moment before the 6-30" by 2.

I dont really like hybrids if im honest but it just looks weird compared to the others I have kept and cant put my finger on it so that I am confident with the ID.

If you want a dovii and you are prepared to make a 5 hour round trip, then I know for a fact there is a 5-6 inch female at Wharf Aquatics in Derbyshire - just off Junction 28 of the M1.

I know it's a bit of a traipse and they do not ship, but trust me, mate, I've seen the fish on a number of occasions!

Ice got a female gold morph jag and a male blue Nicaraguan blue dovii and their dry even has more molting and color. I would lean toward a low grade FH and mana hybrid. I had one that was similar once. Or salvini mix?
