i have a 55 gallon tank and i have two HOB's hang back filters

1.AC 40-70
2.Penn-plax Cascade 150-200

Thats a bit light IMO. The cascades marginal at best. (I set one of them up that I got in a tank deal in order to do an article about them in my ... This old filter...blog.)

The AC is a good filter but your still looking at a fraction of the turn over rate I run in our 50..55..60...gallon tanks. And two of these tanks are grow out tanks for fry.

Add a pair of air driven Hydro5's and or a good canister in the Fluval 404/405 class.
If you don't want to go with the sponge filters or the canister then scrap the cascade in favor of an E400 (Emporer) equipped with supercartrages (SC-6) and then run the AC with all filter sponges and scrap the rest of the media.

I agree. My husband found this 55 gallon tank with fish at a moving away yard sale. The two dinky HOBs could not begin to handle the bioload of all these big fish. We were doing the equivalent of 80 - 100% water changes everyday to keep the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates down. It was a horrendous experience.

u can never have too much filtering... unless of course ur tank is a giant cyclone of water... then i think it's time to stop

If you're doing a monster tank, I would say a minimum of two AC 70's. Keep the cascade for extra mech filtration. Other than that, they're worthless.

I have 2 JDs(females),1 Oscar,2 baby placos that can easly Fit in O's mouth, but i think he's a veggie.Anyway I will be moving one of Jds 2 Another tank Wednesday

I have 2 fluval 205's and a 22 gallon wet/dry/sump pushing 600gph on my 55 gallon tank. I agree that there is almost never "too much" filtration, and I subscribe to the theory that if you question whether or not you have enough filtration, the answer is "no".
(on my 150 that is lightly stocked, I have 2 fluval fx5's)
