is this HITH (hole in the head)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes that's hith. Usually caused by bad water and bad diet. Most of the meds don't work.

do a big water change around 50% treat with melafix and turn the heat to 80-82*

unfortunatly he does look like he has it..

ah sorry i thought an established tank would be one thats been running a long time. but it has cycled etc i cycled over a period of 1 month and 2 weeks with live fish in there. not him of course. I am feeding him the comet feeders which are quarantined in a 10g tank with filtration and heater for 3 days before feeding. i also feed him hikkari gold pellets and bloodworms.

i will try the melafix stuff with a big water change hopefully that will work. i didnt notice these pots until he moved to the bigger tank so im guessing the stress also brought it on.

do not give him feeders.... quarenteened or not they do nothing for nutritional value.. and if you do give it should be rare.. your better off sticking with cichlid pellets and silversides...and shrimp... most varied diet possible is the best.. but also extreme water changes.. i have a jag with HITH he was adopted.. and the water changes make the difference of keeping the HITH in check and it does not get worse.. he has been going great for years now.

My Oscar has HITH real bad. Amonnia = 0 Nitrates and Nitrite levels are very low and it is fed hikari gold along with home made blended fish with veg and vitamins but still has signs of new holes. At this point it seems futile to treat the HITH.

as long as you did water changes on a regular basis.. and your oscar had a big enough tank... don't beat yourself up over it.. it does happen alot.. i really think HITH is always there in oscars and other cichlids.. something just brings it out... stress, not feeding a varied diet and not doing water changes enough are just steps to help prevent it.. but it does not prevent it sometimes..

are you saying to like 50% water changes every other day or something red devil? forever?

Aggreed^^
You say waterquality is fine, but can we get the actual results for Ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
Seems like your waterQuality is prob off.
I wouldn't medicate, but test your water and start waterchanges with Prime added.
HITH should heal given pristine water and a varied diet.

no not that much... i did do a few treatments of HITH treatments in the beginning.......i also added some aquarium salt{ according to directions per gallon} which i still do once in awhile....and i do 50% water change every three days...of course if it is a large tank with few tankmates you could do 25% ..my jag is in 75 gal tank... by himself... when i go to lfs to buy a jag or oscar or severum baby i take a magnifying glass with me.. i have noticed that some very small babies have the HITH ..you can barely see it but it is there... so just examine these guys good when you pic them out...i have my jag for 5 years now.. he is about a foot... he had HITH bad...but now all the holes have healed over.. and he is awesome.. you can still see old scars.. but he is alive and healthy and a great personality... he sees me pic up his food and he jumps and splashes... he is worth it.. heres his pic
