HONORURU, HAWAII!
Hey guys, i was just looking at my oscars last night and noticed this on the alpha's head...never had oscars before let alone one with hole in head..

oscarhih.jpg

sorry for the bad pic, used my blackberry...

If you are talking about the white patches, yes but if it is, it is quite early on in the disease and you might want to treat it. http://www.aquariumguys.com/holenhead.html this is the stuff that most people have used and it works pretty well.

Also what filters are ou running and are you doing weekly water changes?

referring to the white spot above his eye...the other side of his head does not have that and neither do any of the other oscars...

filter is an AC110 and a ll40lph marineland powerhead for current. Also am doing weekly water changes, approx 50-60%...this tank produces a lot of waste.

oscars have tiny sensory pores on their head and these are most likely what your seeing. However oscars are susceptible to hole in the head and the sensory pores are one of the first places where disease manifests itself... i would like to see clearer pics if possible..as this pic is not clear enough to see any small holes... or scaly surface. In a healthy specimen these holes will be uniformly pinhole sized and arranged in small clusters.. in specimens with HITH the margins of these pores increase in size and overlap one another, and eventually become rather pronounced ugly pits.. i just happen to read this in TFM this month. white spots do not look like HITH but rather a scrape from a decoration or a fuss with another fish..
the exact cause of HITH has not been determined..some possibilities are poor water quality, improper diet, vitamin definciencies, and bacterial infections..to prevent it ... have extreme high water quality.. through frequent water changes.

i will try to get better pictures.
it looks like one of his lateral line pores got sunken in...and i am aware of their sensory pits. the first time i saw them i thought it was the beginning of hole in head, but their 5point star-like formation made me conclude they were not bad.

The indention doesnt look like a battle wound either (overstocked with oscars in this tank)...

anyway, thanks so far for the input everyone!
i'm gonna beef up the water changes starting today. ideally i would want another AC110 for filtration. starting to learn that all conventional bioload::filtration guidelines are put on steroids when you go MFK :D

will try and get better pics tonight!

Oscars are one of the harder keepers to keep water quality up.. they are slobs to put it bluntly..o i love them too... if you have more then one or two your load is really heavy...and also Oscars do not get along with each other very well after a certain age.. i still think it could be due to fussing..but regardless still need better pic..

i do hope its from fighting over who gets to hide in PVC pipe XD
hopefully my friend who gave them to me is willing to take em back...or at least 2 of the 4.
