I somehow doubt that all the fish would eat at all after you change their surrundings in first few hours.
Waste? It depends on fishes, but you can add small plates with food, but having correct fishes (main eaters, "waste eaters" (who constantly search for small amounts of leftovers), snails/shrimps) and dosing fish food few times per week is probably the best way.
Personally, I do it and both my small aquariums (both ~10 gallons with few different plecos (which produce tons of waste), guppies, snails, shrimps) have their parameters good: <0,025 amonnia/nitrite with a little bit nitrate (up to 1 ppm) with small water changes every 1-2 weeks.
