Is this just a dull firemouth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
People don't realize that firemouth cichlids are so diverse not only in coloration but also in body shape where they come from. I honestly do not think you are doing anything inherently wrong you just happen to have a "dull firemouth". I wouldn't fret though I have seen worse. Meeki have been inbred so much that sometimes you just get a fish with bad genes. What's funny is I can find f1 lyonsi(a fish which is endangered in the wild) easier than I can find f1 meeki. Jeff Rapps had some one his list years ago from rio subin but I have not seen any sense.

Here are pics of the rio subin variety I found online.

My FM is also very dull. I'm thinking it might be a female?

And of course you have to watch out for the signs of hybridism... This is my Meeki/Ellioti cross from a miss spawning I had earlier this year.

Hes much larger than a normal firemouth and is already 5" body length (7" total length) after just 5 mouths... He dwarfs the other FMs in the tank and hes still growing fast!

Params all check out, and the lighting is very well, think just poor genes.

Well that may be true. They have been in the hobby for a long time which would be the reason for poor genes. You rarely see Meeki sold from different locations in Belize or Mexico. They can really vary in size, colors and shape.
