I don't think it's the easiest thing to grasp when encountering johannii types.
Fact is that they are much in the same hybrid hole that Midas and Red Devil cichlids are.
Unless you get the from a good source then they are most likely hybrids. Whether it be M. johannii, M. interruptus/elastodema, M. cynoerhabdos and even P. elongatus can be thrown in for good measure as the "likoma/ornatus" variant can be mistaken for M. interruptus by someone who is unscrupulous there is simply no way to know if your johannii types are pure. For anyone who has M. johannii or it's look-alikes you have M. "johannii type" unless you purchased them from a most reputable source and preferably not far removed from wildcaught with location.
