I just set up my 55g last night, got the filter and heater running and put in the dechlorinator and the bacteria at the amounts specified on the containers. I woke up this morning and there is a lot of condensation on my heater, as well as just above the water line, which is about 1 inch below the black rim around the top of the tank. Is the condensation normal?

cant have condensation on something underwater,if theres condensation in the heater,no not normal, thats bad.

take the heater out immediately. if it has a crack in it (this would explain the condensation) then it could malfunction and crack and be a mess to clean up. as for the condensation around the top of the tank above the waterline, that happens from water flow and is harmless. if you don't like the way it looks, just top off the tank

Yeah, the heater is submerged all except for the very top where the knob is. And I suppose I shouldn't call it condensation on the heater, it's more just covered in small bubbles. Possibly gas bubbles, I guess. Are THOSE normal? :) And the thermometer says it's right at 79-80 degrees.

Yeah those small air bubbles are normal when you fill the tank up (if that is what it is).

thats not as scary. condesation would mean a breech and your heater could've actually started boiling and shattering!
